Nature of Work

This is a specialized, technical, investigative, inspection, and administrative position which encompasses conducting inspections of buildings and facilities for adequate fire safety and prevention conditions, conducting investigations of fires for their origin and cause, and public education of fire safety and prevention.  Work is performed with a wide latitude for judgement and independence within established codes, regulations, and technical guidelines.  Work is performed and reviewed under the direct supervision of the Deputy Fire Chief and general supervision of the Fire Chief. 

Essential Functions

  • Conducts construction plan reviews on all commercial buildings to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances adopted by the city and state.  Reviews include site, structural, alarm and fire protections systems. Conducts spot inspections throughout the construction process; advises contractors and builders on corrective actions for adherence to codes; conducts final inspection and system testing prior to the building being occupied.
  • Conducts field inspections on public and private business and structures to ensure compliance with all adopted codes and ordinances. Advises owners and occupants to insure strict compliance with applicable codes.
  • Prepares inspection reports in a clear and concise manner.  Issues permits for applicable structures and services.
  • Issues citations for noncompliance of fire codes and ordinances.
  • Investigates and evaluates fire scene to determine the area/point of origin, source of ignition, material ignited, act(s) or activity that brought the ignition source and materials together. Coordinates with fire suppression personnel for the purpose of scene preservation and debris removal. Secures fire scene to ensure evidence or potential evidence is protected for damage, destruction, or contamination. Collects and preserves evidence by using proper and legal procedures.
  • Obtains information through interview and interrogations.  Prepares a comprehensive written report given the investigation findings. Testifies during legal proceedings.
  • Develops and implements programs to educate and train the public and private sector on fire safety and related issues.  Makes presentations, trains, interviews, or publically speaks to schools, civic groups, organizations, or media on fire safety, awareness, and prevention.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention, and fire codes and ISO requirements.
  • Knowledge of effective techniques and methods of fire suppression and control.
  • Knowledge of characteristics of ignitable, explosive, hazardous, and similar materials.
  • Knowledge of geography of the city including principle buildings, hydrants, and the location of special fire hazards.
  • Knowledge of installation/operation of fire protection systems.
  • Knowledge of standard operating guidelines and policies established by Guntersville Fire and Rescue.
  • Skill in the operation of personal computer and applicable software.
  • Ability to read and understand water maps, blueprints, diagrams, and system specifications.
  • Ability to locate and identify fire code violations or potentially hazardous conditions in buildings, structures, and installations.
  • Ability to conduct effective arson investigations and to identify suspicious conditions at the scene of a fire.
  • Ability to examine and review construction plans for code compliance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, subordinates, elected officials, vendors, general public, and those in the course of work.
  • Ability to prepare detailed, concise, and analytical reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid unrestricted Driver’s Licenses
  • Must not have been convicted of any serious misdemeanors: must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Possess current ProBoard, or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification for Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor I,  Fire Investigator I, and Fire Inspector I
  • Five (5) years firefighting experience and must have served three (3) years continuous service as a member of the Guntersville Fire & Rescue Department.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, Emergency Management or related field.
  • Possess current ProBoard, or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification for Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor II, Fire Investigator II, and Fire Inspector II.

Physical Requirements:

Work requires employee to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, feel, grasp, push, pull, and have manual dexterity frequently.  Work requires at times sustained performance for extended periods of time of physical task, such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, working in confined or restricted spaces, working at heights, lifting over 50 pounds, shoveling, digging, and moving fire debris.

NATURE OF WORK

The Airport Attendant supports daily operations of the Airport by assisting patrons, fueling, FBO and ground maintenance, and light administrative duties. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Airport Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Ensures that operations at the airport fixed base operations office, machinery, and equipment function smoothly.
  2. Performs a variety of office administrative tasks in operation of the airport.
  3. Maintains the aviation fueling operations in a safe and high quality condition; monitors aviation fuel supplies and equipment inventory accordingly.
  4. Keeps the airport facilities in good condition in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration operational guidelines.
  5. Responsible for weekly inspection of inventory and quality control tasks.
  6. Participates in hanger, FBO and ground maintenance.
  7. Maintains up-to-date files regarding functions and operations.
  8. Assist in the preparation of the manager’s report that is reviewed monthly by the Airport Advisory Board.

Nature of Work

This is a skilled manual labor position responsible for the repair and maintenance of small engines on powered equipment used in the daily operations of the Street/Maintenance Department. Work also may involve supporting labor force within the department.  Work is performed and reviewed under the direct supervision of the Assistant Street/Maintenance Supervisor and under the general supervision of the Street/Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Diagnosis, adjust, repairs, and/or overhauls small engines used to power lawn mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, jack hammers, concrete mixers, skill saws, concrete saws, and other departmental equipment.
  • Diagnosis, adjust, and repair tractor implements.
  • Performs general, seasonal, and preventive maintenance task necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment; provides information to employees on equipment maintenance.
  • Test machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; reports problem situations.
  • Maintains, sharpens, and repairs hand tools.
  • Maintains records of maintenance and repairs; discusses cost of equipment repair in comparison to equipment replacement with appropriate personnel; provides information to employees on equipment maintenance.
  • Maintains inventory on supplies and parts; organizes parts and supply room.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with departmental operations.
  • Transports, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in departmental projects and operation.

Nature of Work

The incumbent of this position is responsible for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of Federal, State, and City laws and ordinances.  Following proper police protocol, this position is responsible for, but not limited to, patrolling, surveillance, traffic control, apprehension of law violators, public relations, preservation of peace and public order, repress and prevent crime, and preparing related paperwork and reports.  Every Police Officer, regardless of assignment such as Ordinance Enforcement, School Resource Officer, Park Ranger, or K-9 Officer shall abide by the job description set in place for each titled position, as this will ultimately remain the primary function of the aforementioned titles. Work is performed under the supervision of the shift Lieutenant/Sergeant.

Essential Functions

  • Protects lives and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances; patrols a designated area of City on foot or in a radio equipped car to preserve law and order and provide routine preventive patrol in residential and business areas; provides security at school events and civic functions.
  • Responds to a wide variety of calls and complaints relayed by dispatcher, both routine and emergency including domestic disputes, burglaries, traffic accidents, assaults, shootings, murders, and other misdemeanors and felonies; responds to emergency alarms; responds to fire calls and assist rescue personal; directs traffic during civic functions, funeral processions, roadway hazards, etc.; assist stranded motorist and administers first aid when needed.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses; makes arrest, transport prisoners to jail, and process offenders; performs investigation to help determine cause of accident.
  • Issues civil or legal documents such as traffic citations; serves legal documents such as subpoenas and warrants; prepares detailed Incident/Accident investigation reports, wreck reports, and arrest reports; maintain required records of activities and events while on duty.
  • Give recommendations, as well as general information, to public on laws and ordinances relating to home or business security, child safety, neighborhood watches, etc.
  • Required to testify and present evidence in court proceedings when necessary.
  • Operates a variety of equipment used in police work including Breathalyzer machine, mobile or base two-way radio, traffic radar unit, Taser, computers and other related or assigned equipment.
  • Must keep shift Sergeant/Lieutenant and other supervisors informed of work conditions, needs, and critical situations related to daily work, objective, and goals of the department.
  • Attends in-service training, and technical or professional classes or seminars to maintain required certification or improve technical or professional skills.

  1. Drives and operates refuse collection truck in a safe, efficient, and legal manner on assigned route; ensures route is completed in a safe and timely manner, including assisting on other routes to meet customer needs.
  2. Assist in collecting and loading operations as needed.
  3. Inspects refuse truck daily to ensure vehicle is properly equipment, serviced, and cleaned; reports needed repairs or safety issues to supervisor; performs minor maintenance as needed or required.  
  4. Serves as crew leader over assigned employees engaged in manual laborer.
  5. Courteously interacts with customers ensuring customers are serviced in a professional and timely manner.
  6. Reports any service issues such as blocked alleyways, over-weight containers, safety hazards, or impassible streets to supervisor; reports needed container repairs or replacements to supervisor.
  7. Clears waste from packer blade and truck body on each trip to disposal site.
  8. Performs related work as assigned or required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in equipment operations.
  2. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the operations of assigned equipment associated with manual labor task.
  3. Knowledge of street and address locations.
  4. Excellent truck driving/maneuvering skills.
  5. Time management skills to ensure duties are completed in a safe and efficient manner.
  6. Ability to read and understand map.
  7. Ability to make simple field repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, subordinate employees, customers, general public and those contacted in the course of work. relationships with the general public.
  9. Ability to interact with customers in a professional and courteous manner.
  10. Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  11. Ability to work overtime, including weekends and holiday when necessary.
  12. Ability to perform all essential functions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Currently hold a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A or B, with driving record suitable for insurability.
  2. Two years of commercial driving experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Sufficient physical strength to lift and carry 75 pounds; ability to walk, kneel, squat, climb, push, pull, and to sit for prolong periods of time.
  2. Ability to work in very cold and hot temperatures and to work in inclement weather.

The City of Guntersville currently has an opening for School Crossing Guard.  This is a part-time, seasonal position.  The essential functions and knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Functions:

  1. Traffic control to ensure safety of students entering and exiting school by using hand signals, signs, or flags.
  2. Ensure students are made award of hazards that may be posed to them when crossing street, without paying attention to the surroundings.
  3. Stops and warns unsafe drivers of traffic laws and safety concerns as needed.
  4. Reports to SRO or school official any unsafe, unusual, or suspicious activity that is noticed around school parking lots or grounds.
  5. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of traffic and pedestrian laws, rules, and regulations and ability to demonstrate such knowledge.
  2. Knowledge of crosswalks, road entrance and exits, and traffic flow patterns at designated school locations.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and tactfully with the general public.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain and effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, school officials, teachers, bus drivers, general public and those in contact in the course of work.
  5. Ability to control traffic flow while escorting pedestrians across road.
  6. Ability to react calmly and quickly to emergency situations.
  7. Ability to learn from observation.
  8. Ability to report to work 2 shifts daily (morning and afternoon) and to provide regular and predictable attendance.
  9. Ability to work a flexible schedule and report to early dismissals as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  2. Must have a valid Alabama Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and to perform crossing guard duties in any weather condition.
