Job Description

Nature of Work:

This is a skilled position that involves combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; extrication, rescuing, and providing emergency medical care in answering emergency calls. The work includes routine duties in the maintenance of firefighting vehicles, equipment, apparatus, facilities, and quarters.  Work is usually performed in accordance with explicit instructions and well-defined procedures; however the work requires initiative and a thorough understanding of firefighting, extrication, rescue, emergency medical care, and fire prevention principles and methods. Employee shall work a standard schedule of 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty. Work is performed and reviewed under the direct supervision of shift Captain/Lieutenant and general supervision from Fire Chief/Deputy Fire Chief.

Essential Functions:

Responds to all types of rescue, fire suppression, medical, and non-medical emergency calls, and implements actions required to save lives and property, and protect the environment;  operates standard fire suppression, rescue and medical equipment safely and efficiently to achieve desired outcomes while adhering to departmental policies and applicable State or local laws and protocols; performs routine and preventive maintenance of City equipment, facilities and vehicles; following demonstration of competence, drives City vehicles as assigned in a safe manner; participates in non-emergency activities such as fire prevention inspections, public education programs, and public relations events; receives and responds to citizen requests for general information or assistance; monitors departmental radio transmissions and telephones; completes all required reports;  must be willing to be trained, certified, licensed or assigned duties deemed necessary by the department; performs other duties as directed or assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Some knowledge of the street system, physical layout, and principal buildings of Guntersville, Alabama; skill in the use of computer and applicable software;  ability to quickly perform all functions in difficult and hazardous situations, without hesitation, with direction from superiors; ability to comprehend and apply instructions, and communicate information in a clear and concise manner; ability to respond to potentially dangerous situations and make quick and sound decisions; ability to perform physically demanding work and withstand very hazardous conditions; ability to operate fire equipment and tools appropriately; ability to provide emergency medical care within scope of practice; ability to prepare accurate records and reports; ability to effectively communicate with the customer in a professional and courteous manner; ability to communicate effectively both orally and written; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with department head, supervisors, co-workers and those in contact in the course of work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid unrestricted Drivers License
  • At least 18 years of age on the date of application
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must not have been convicted of any serious misdemeanors; must not have been    convicted of a felony.
  • Possess a current Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) from approved AFC test location.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Current Alabama Firefighter I/II certification
  • Current Alabama EMS license, Paramedic preferred
  • Current Alabama EVOC or equivalent certification

  • NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800

Necessary Special Requirements:

Nature of Work

This is a first –line supervisory, administrative and technical position that requires extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of modern police science, administration, leadership, and crime investigation that are essential to the operation of the City of Guntersville Police Department.

Work involves field supervision of a patrol shift. The Patrol Sergeant works in conjunction with subordinates through assuming a shared workload: Therefore, a Patrol Sergeant’s time is primarily spent in the field alongside his or her subordinates. The position supervises other officers and assist the Lieutenant in overseeing the functions of shifts daily actives. The Patrol Sergeant will approve reports, leave, and payroll and overtime in the Lieutenant’s absents.  The position still conducts investigations, regular patrol, traffic stops, responds to calls, assists the Patrol Division and performs other related police work.  Included in the work is records management, community information services, field operations, training, special programs and criminal patrol investigations.  Additionally the position coordinates assigned activities with other city departments and outside agencies.  

Under direct supervision of the Lieutenant over Patrol Operations and general supervision of Chief of Police/Deputy Chief of Police, this position exercises considerable independent judgement in planning and implementing patrol duties and related services and activities for the shift assigned.

 Essential Functions

  • Makes recommendations for departmental polices and regulations plus the department’s work plan, particularly as it relates to patrol, in consultation with the Captain of Patrol Operations, Deputy Chief, the Chief of Police, and with the assistance of subordinate officers.
  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates division/department personnel to include provision and coordination of staff training and working with personnel to correct deficiencies, implementing discipline, and termination procedures; assist with selection of new officers; provides leadership and support to subordinates.
  • Maintains a comprehensive current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws / regulations including field and code manuals in various police fields through reading, training, coursework etc…
  • Supervises personnel in all aspects of criminal investigation to include continual monitoring of ongoing criminal investigations involving persons, property, narcotics and other illegal activities.
  • Supervises assigned staff, which could include, shift Patrol, School Resource Officers, and Communications Officers; ensures subordinate staff fulfill their duties.
  • Monitors and evaluates on a continuous basis, the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures to include assessing workload, administrative and support systems, internal reporting relationships; identifies opportunities for improvement and directs implementation of changes.
  • Commands police force during emergencies in absence of the Chief of Police or other ranking officers as needed.
  • Controls / supervises the maintenance, repairs and upkeep of patrol related equipment, property to include upgrades of equipment and other related apparatus.  Supervises the surplus of patrol property as needed.
  • Oversees reports and summaries of activities, and completes necessary and required forms and reports.
  • Oversees or makes arrests and process subjects to include preparing cases for grand jury or court trial as needed in addition to preparing for and testifying in court as necessary.
  • Overseeing of a shift in regard to reporting on significate events to the chain of command; communicates critical information to the department
  • Efficiently managing calls for service in the field
  • Ensuring minimum staffing of patrol shift on each shift
  • Responds and supervises critical incidents or major events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid unrestricted Driver’s Licenses
  • Must be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Alabama Peace Officers Standard and Training (APOST) and have basic and advanced certifications or coursework in the area of criminal investigation (Interview and interrogation, crime scene, narcotics, computers, financial, etc…)
  • Three (3) years of experience and training equivalent to thorough experience in modern police work which has afforded progressively responsible experience in a variety of police functions to include crime investigation work.
  • Two (2) years of experience at a supervisor level in the Guntersville Police Departmen

Desirable Qualifications

  • Associates or higher-level degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or related field preferred.

Physical Requirements

Nature of Work

This is a manual labor position associated with the maintenance and care of the Guntersville Parks & Recreation department which include, but not limited to athletic fields, parks, buildings, and facilities. Depending on assignment, may require the operation of a variety of powered equipment along with manual labor associated with the repair, maintenance, and daily operations of the department. This position may require some weekend and/or holiday work.  Work is performed under the direct supervision of a crew leader and general supervision of the Director of Parks & Recreation.

Nature of Work

This is a skilled manual labor position responsible for the repair and maintenance of small engines on powered equipment used in the daily operations of the Street/Maintenance Department. Work also may involve supporting labor force within the department.  Work is performed and reviewed under the direct supervision of the Assistant Street/Maintenance Supervisor and under the general supervision of the Street/Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Diagnosis, adjust, repairs, and/or overhauls small engines used to power lawn mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, jack hammers, concrete mixers, skill saws, concrete saws, and other departmental equipment.
  • Diagnosis, adjust, and repair tractor implements.
  • Performs general, seasonal, and preventive maintenance task necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment; provides information to employees on equipment maintenance.
  • Test machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; reports problem situations.
  • Maintains, sharpens, and repairs hand tools.
  • Maintains records of maintenance and repairs; discusses cost of equipment repair in comparison to equipment replacement with appropriate personnel; provides information to employees on equipment maintenance.

Job Description

Nature of Work:

This is a part-time (29 hours or less) position that is responsible for transporting passengers throughout the county as needed and assisting with boarding or de-boarding when necessary.  Also requires accurate record keeping by completing daily trip logs.  This position receives supervision from the Director of Transportation.

Responsibilities:

  1. Operates public transportation bus within county district transporting passengers to and from destinations.

Nature of Work

The incumbent of this position is responsible for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of Federal, State, and City laws and ordinances.  Following proper police protocol, this position is responsible for, but not limited to, patrolling, surveillance, traffic control, apprehension of law violators, public relations, preservation of peace and public order, repress and prevent crime, and preparing related paperwork and reports.  Every Police Officer, regardless of assignment such as Ordinance Enforcement, School Resource Officer, Park Ranger, or K-9 Officer shall abide by the job description set in place for each titled position, as this will ultimately remain the primary function of the aforementioned titles. Work is performed under the supervision of the shift Lieutenant/Sergeant.

Essential Functions

  • Protects lives and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances; patrols a designated area of City on foot or in a radio equipped car to preserve law and order and provide routine preventive patrol in residential and business areas; provides security at school events and civic functions.
  • Responds to a wide variety of calls and complaints relayed by dispatcher, both routine and emergency including domestic disputes, burglaries, traffic accidents, assaults, shootings, murders, and other misdemeanors and felonies; responds to emergency alarms; responds to fire calls and assist rescue personal; directs traffic during civic functions, funeral processions, roadway hazards, etc.; assist stranded motorist and administers first aid when needed.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses; makes arrest, transport prisoners to jail, and process offenders; performs investigation to help determine cause of accident.
  • Issues civil or legal documents such as traffic citations; serves legal documents such as subpoenas and warrants; prepares detailed Incident/Accident investigation reports, wreck reports, and arrest reports; maintain required records of activities and events while on duty.
  • Give recommendations, as well as general information, to public on laws and ordinances relating to home or business security, child safety, neighborhood watches, etc.
  • Required to testify and present evidence in court proceedings when necessary.
  • Operates a variety of equipment used in police work including Breathalyzer machine, mobile or base two-way radio, traffic radar unit, Taser, computers and other related or assigned equipment.
  • Must keep shift Sergeant/Lieutenant and other supervisors informed of work conditions, needs, and critical situations related to daily work, objective, and goals of the department.
  • Attends in-service training, and technical or professional classes or seminars to maintain required certification or improve technical or professional skills.
  • These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive duties. Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any given time at the discretion Chief of Police and/or immediate supervisor.  It may be done formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of modern police operations, principles, practices, and procedures with the ability to apply this knowledge to specific situations.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws as they pertain to law enforcement; knowledge of department SOG’s, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of geography of the City or ability to acquire this knowledge.
  • Proficient skill in the use and care of firearms, Taser, Draeger, NCIC, self- defense, PBT, chemical sprays, vehicles, and other related police equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of computer and applicable software applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, outside agencies, general public, and those in contact in course of work.
  • Ability to enforce law fairly and impartially with tact and courtesy, or firmness if necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to perform duties requiring physical endurance and agility frequently under adverse and dangerous conditions; ability to perform all essential job functions.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with regard to surrounding hazards and conditions.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to maintain physical requirements as specified by department policy.
  • Ability to exhibit professionalism at all times

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted Driver’s License with a driving record suitable for insurability.
  • Must possess a State of AL Peace Officers Law Enforcement Certification or obtain a lateral academy (APOST) certification at the earliest opportunity or must successfully complete police academy minimum certification within a specified time from date of appointment.
  • Must present good evidence of good moral character as attested by background investigation.

  1. Drives and operates refuse collection truck in a safe, efficient, and legal manner on assigned route; ensures route is completed in a safe and timely manner, including assisting on other routes to meet customer needs.

  3. Inspects refuse truck daily to ensure vehicle is properly equipment, serviced, and cleaned; reports needed repairs or safety issues to supervisor; performs minor maintenance as needed or required.  
  4. Serves as crew leader over assigned employees engaged in manual laborer.
  5. Courteously interacts with customers ensuring customers are serviced in a professional and timely manner.

  7. Clears waste from packer blade and truck body on each trip to disposal site.

  1. Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations involved in equipment operations.
  2. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the operations of assigned equipment associated with manual labor task.
  3. Knowledge of street and address locations.
  4. Excellent truck driving/maneuvering skills.
  5. Time management skills to ensure duties are completed in a safe and efficient manner.
  6. Ability to read and understand map.
  7. Ability to make simple field repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, subordinate employees, customers, general public and those contacted in the course of work. relationships with the general public.
