Applications may be obtained from the City of Guntersville Human Resources (Personnel) Office located at 341 Gunter Avenue, Guntersville, AL or by visiting our website at www.guntersvilleal.org.  Completed applications for qualified applicants should be returned to the City of Guntersville Human Resources (Personnel) Department at 341 Gunter Avenue, Guntersville, AL 35976 or be emailed to humanresources@guntersvilleal.gov.    Applications will be accepted until position is filled.

Nature of Work:

This is a manual laborer position associated with the landscaping and maintenance of City parks, properties, and right of ways. Work follows established routine and requires self-motivation to work, at times, with little direct supervision. Position takes general supervision from the Horticulture Supervisor and work is reviewed primarily through inspection.

Essential Functions:

  • Plant, fertilize, prune, spray, and care for plants and trees located on city property.
  • Plant seasonal bedding plants.
  • Install new landscapes as needed or required.
  • Operate light powered machines such as sprayers, lawn mowers, weed eaters, hand tools and similar equipment in support of departmental operations.
  • Perform mowing, trimming, raking, and other manual task associated with landscaping and ground maintenance.
  • Maintain mowers, tools (powered and manual), and other equipment; make simple field adjustments as needed.
  • Police grounds and remove any litter or debris as needed or required.
  • Assist in installation of seasonal decorations.
  • Perform custodial work in support of cleaning and maintenance of department facilities and grounds.
  • These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive duties. Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any given time at the discretion of the Horticulture Supervisor. It may be done formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of landscaping, grounds keeping, and maintenance.
  • Skilled in the use of manual tools such as rakes and shovels.
  • Skilled in the operation of light powered tools such as weed eaters, lawn mowers, sprayers, and similar equipment used in landscaping.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral & written instructions.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and ATV.
  • Ability to perform all essential functions.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work overtime when needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, supervisors, co-workers, general public, and those contacted in the course of work.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid Drivers’ License with driving record suitable for insurability.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sufficient physical to lift and carry at least 50 pounds; ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time; ability to sit, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, stretch, reach, feel, grasp, handle, lift, push, pull, manual dexterity, and visual acuity at a level to operate motor vehicles.
  • Stamina to work in very cold and hot temperatures and inclement weather.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years’ experience in landscaping or lawn maintenance.
