Nature of Work:

This is a skilled laborer position associated with routine maintenance, diagnose malfunctions, and repair of motorized vehicles, as well as standard and specialized automotive equipment used in the daily activities of the City of Guntersville operations.  Incumbents in this position require good judgement and initiative skills in carrying out specific work assignments.  Work is performed and reviewed under the supervision of the Fleet Supervisor.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs preventative maintenance and adjustments to gasoline and diesel engines and equipment such as checking fluid levels, changing oil and filters, batteries, hoses, and tires; examines parts for damage and excessive wear; replaces necessary units and related parts.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose malfunctions, tunes engines, and test performance using standardized manual and computerized diagnostic methods.
  • Perform necessary welding using oxy-acetylene, wire, and electric arc welder, operate cutting torch, and perform general fabrication as needed in completing repairs.
  • Operates automotive maintenance and repair equipment and tools in performance of duties such as lifts, air compressors, air wrenches, grease guns, battery charger, sanders, saws, drill press, diagnostic instruments and software.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain necessary components such as brakes, ignitions, fuel assemblies, cooling systems, exhaust systems, transmissions, and drive train components.
  • Maintains vehicle and equipment maintenance records to include parts and accumulated hours; complete any requested or required reports.
  • Responsible for weekly inventory checks of fluids, supplies and parts.
  • Perform roadside repair on various vehicles and equipment as necessary or required.
  • Performs general housekeeping duties associated with maintaining shop area.
  • These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive duties. Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any given time at the direction of the Fleet Supervisor.  It may be done formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:    

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices necessary in the maintenance and repair of gasoline powered motor vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and standard practices necessary in the maintenance and repair of diesel powered motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of automotive operating systems such as electrical, exhaust, and cooling systems.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the operation of assigned equipment and associated manual labor task.
  • Skilled in the use of powered automotive repair tools such has lifts, compressors, air wrenches, grease guns, and battery chargers.
  • Skilled in the use of manual tools such wrenches, hammers, chisels, punches, and other related hand tools.
  • Skilled in the use of basic computer operations to include applicable software; skilled in the use of modern day automotive computerized diagnostic devices and software.
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral & written instructions.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow automotive manuals, guides, and diagrams applicable in maintaining and repairing vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include nights and weekends, including overtime when necessary.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in carrying out assigned duties.
  • Ability to attend off-site training classes, including overnight stays, when necessary.
  • Ability to perform assigned duties in a safe manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, supervisors, co-workers, vendors, general public, and those contacted in the course of work. 
  • Ability to perform all essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sufficient physical strength to lift and carry at least 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds on occasions.
  • Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, stretch, reach feel, grasp, handle, lift, push pull.
  • Ability to work in very cold and hot temperatures, and inclement weather.
  • Ability to work safely in a noisy area with odors present.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possess a valid State of Alabama Drivers’ License, Class A Commercial Driver’s License preferred, or ability to obtain within a specified period of time from date of hire, with driving record suitable for insurability.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Approximately 1 year experience in automotive repair or related field

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Completion of vocational/technical school program or apprenticeship in auto repair or related field.
