Title: Equipment Operator I
Department: Street/Maintenance
Hours: 6AM-4:30PM, M-T
FLSA: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Nature of Work
This is a skilled position responsible for operating light to medium trucks and tractors, including manual labor, associated with upkeep and maintenance of City properties, streets, roads, easements, and right-of-ways. Depending on assignment, may operate a variety of equipment such as mower, leaf machine chute, and tractor equipped with attachment such as bush hog. Also operates light powered equipment such as chain saw, weed trimmer, sprayer, along with manual tools associated with routine maintenance, removal of trees, brush, debris, or other hazards during both normal and outside work hours as directed by supervision. Work is performed under the direction of designated Crew leader and reviewed by the Street/Maintenance Assistant Supervisor and under the general supervision of the Street/Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Functions

- Operates tractor pulling various equipment such as bush hog.
- Drives medium duty truck, hauls trash, debris and other materials as needed.
- Operates light powered equipment utilized in performance of assigned tasks, such as, but not limited to, mower, leaf machine chute, chainsaw, pole saw, and weed trimmer.
- Performs pre-trip safety inspection; maintains tools (powered and manual) and performs routine maintenance and minor field repairs or adjustments as required or needed.
- Performs manual labor tasks such as grass cutting and picking up trash; removal of trees, bushes, brush, and debris from streets, roads, right of ways, bridges, culverts, and drains.
- Assist in storm clean up as needed resulting from inclement weather.
- These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive duties. Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any given time at the direction of the Street/Maintenance Supervisor. It may be done formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of motor driven equipment used in maintenance activities and demonstrates ability to operate assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the operation of assigned equipment and associated manual labor tasks.
- Skilled in the operation of tractors and associated attachments used in mowing and maintenance.
- Skilled in the proper use of manual tools associated with upkeep, repair, and maintenance of municipal properties.
- Skilled in the operation and proper use of a variety of light power equipment such as, but not limited to mowers, weed eaters, trimmers, pole saws, and chain saws.
- Ability to follow simple oral or written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, park patrons, general public, and those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to work non-standard hours, including overtime, which could include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license with driving record suitable for insurability.
Physical Requirements
- Sufficient physical strength and endurance to perform manual labor associated loading and unloading trucks, clearing trees and debris; ability and to lift and carry at least 80 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, stretch, reach, feel, grasp, handle, lift, push, pull, manual dexterity, talk to be heard above ambient noise, and visual acuity at a level to operate motor vehicles.
- Stamina to work in very cold and hot temperatures, and inclement weather.
- Ability to drive and operate equipment up to 8-10 hours a day.
