Job Title: Adult Services Librarian/Assistant Director

Nature of Work
This full-time position combines the responsibilities of the Adult Services Librarian and Assistant Director. The successful candidate will lead the development and delivery of adult library services, including reference, programming, collection development, and technology assistance, while also serving in a key administrative role. As Assistant Director, this position supports the Library Director in overseeing daily operations, supervising staff, and helping to shape strategic goals and community partnerships. A strong commitment to public service, library ethics, and effective leadership is essential. Work is performed and reviewed under the general supervision of the Library Director.
Essential Functions
- Provide excellent customer service as a primary responsibility, including assisting patrons with reference questions, readers’ advisory, and general library inquiries in person, by phone, and online.
- Deliver responsive and knowledgeable reference services, ensuring that patrons receive timely, accurate, and courteous assistance with their information needs.
- Offer one-on-one technology help to patrons using computers, tablets, smartphones, e-readers, and library digital resources.
- Manage the selection, acquisition, and weeding of adult materials in all formats, including print, audiovisual, digital resources, databases, and local history/genealogical collections.
- Plan, promote, and implement engaging educational and recreational programs for adults.
- Maintain and organize the local history archives and assist patrons with genealogy and historical research.
- Provide exam proctoring services to students as needed.
- Develop and distribute marketing materials and promotional content in both print and digital formats.
- Design, update, and maintain the library’s website to ensure accurate and appealing content for patrons.
- Track and report relevant library statistics related to collections, circulation, programs, and services.
- Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with community organizations, local agencies, and partners to strengthen the library’s presence, visibility, and outreach.
- Uphold and model a strong understanding of library ethics, values, and policies; ensure all staff actions and decisions align with these standards.
- Serve as the direct supervisor of all library staff, promoting a positive and respectful work environment while addressing problems and interpersonal conflicts in accordance with library policies.
- Oversee staff scheduling and payroll, ensuring accuracy, fairness, and operational efficiency. Organize and maintain employee records and timesheets.
- Facilitate the onboarding and training of new staff members, with an emphasis on professional conduct, library procedures, and ethical service.
- Support library operations in the Director’s temporary absence, representing the library in internal and external matters ensuring continuity of operations.
- Collaborate with the Library Director and Board to develop and implement strategic goals, policies, and procedures that support the library’s mission and long-term sustainability.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of the principles, methods, ethics, and best practices of public librarianship.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn genealogy resources, standards, and research practices.
- Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher), social media platforms, library digital content, and basic networking concepts.
- Thorough knowledge of information formats, delivery methods, and reading materials suitable for adult audiences.
- Proficiency in using computers and a variety of digital tools relevant to library services and operations.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver exceptional customer service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds, with a strong emphasis on professionalism, empathy, and responsiveness.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and respectful working relationships with supervisor, staff, library users, city officials, community stakeholders, general public, and those in the course of work.
- Ability to plan, implement, publicize, and evaluate library materials, services, and programs for adults.
- Capacity to supervise, motivate, and mentor staff with fairness and clarity, grounded in library ethics and policy.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively exchange information, give and receive direction, and foster a collaborative team environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Experience providing customer service in a library or public-facing setting required.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program preferred.
- Relevant library experience strongly preferred; supervisory or leadership experience a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Physical ability to lift on an occasional basis a maximum of 50 pounds with frequent lifting of 25 pounds; ability to reach heights of 72 inches on a frequent basis; ability to bend, kneel, squat, twist, push, pull, and reach heights up to 72 inches; ability to stand for extended periods.
