JOB DESCRIPTION
Nature of Work
This position consist of administrative, supervisory, and, manual labor associated with the daily operations of the maintenance of the Guntersville Parks & Recreation Department. Work involves planning, assigning, supervising, and assisting the various operations associated with maintaining ballfields, various parks, buildings, and facilities within the Guntersville Parks & Recreation Department. Supervision is used over a number of non-skilled to skilled laborers. Work is performed and reviewed under the general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director.
Essential Functions
- Plan, organize, coordinate, assign, and direct work of maintenance labor staff.
- Communicate with the Parks & Recreation Director on a regular basis regarding events, facility rentals, equipment needs, or anything that may be considered pertinent to the maintenance requirements or needs of the Parks & Recreation Department.
- Monitor supplies inventory and usage; receive price quotes on needed material, parts, and supplies; submit price quotes to appropriate personnel for requisition preparation.
- Review time cards/time sheets for approval and submits to appropriate personnel.
- Inspect rental facilities before and after events to insure no damage and proper clean-up occurs.
- In coordination with co-workers and subordinates, assist with set-up and breakdown of events held at various facilities within the Parks & Recreation complex when needed, which may include the Guntersville Senior Center, and provide support personnel when needed.
- Coordinate with Aquatics & Program Supervisor and maintenance staff to provide guidance and inspections regarding custodial duties within the main building of the Parks & Recreation Center and pool area.
- Regularly inspect grounds around outside perimeter of ballfield complexes; communicate on any issues found to appropriate staff and coordinate resolution.
- Inspect weekly all piers covered under the Parks & Recreation Department.
- Maintains tools, truck, mower, tractor and other power equipment; makes simple field repairs.
- Open and closes buildings, park, and other facilities as needed.
- Mow grass, trim shrubs, rake leaves and disposes of trash and debris; apply herbicides or pesticide as needed.
- Performs minor painting and limited building maintenance and repair as needed.
- Drags and lines athletic fields as needed.
- Cleans restrooms, replaces lavatory supplies and disposes of trash and waste paper as needed.
- Drives truck, mower, & tractor; operates various mechanized hand and power equipment used in cutting grass, maintaining grounds, custodial work, and limited facility repair work.
- These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive duties. Other duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or changed at any given time at the discretion of the Parks & Recreation Director. It may be done formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Strong knowledge of parks, athletic fields, and grounds maintenance practices, techniques, and methods.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials & equipment.
- Knowledge of basic electrical and plumbing.
- Skilled in the use of a variety of manual hand tools.
- Skilled in operating trucks, tractors, mowers and other powered maintenance equipment.
- Skill in basic math computations.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Ability to be helpful, courteous and deal tactfully with P & R patrons and general public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, park patrons, general public and those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to delegate tasks to subordinate personnel and ensure that the task is completed appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
- Ability to perform all essential job functions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of five (5) year of any combination of experience and training in cleaning, custodial work, grounds and facility maintenance, or related field in a progressively responsible nature; some supervision experience preferred.
- Must possess a valid unrestricted Driver’s License with driving record suitable for insurability.
Physical Requirements
- Sufficient physical strength to lift and carry at least 50 pounds; ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, stretch, reach, feel, grasp, handle, lift, push, pull, manual dexterity, and visual acuity at a level to operate motor vehicles.
- Ability to work in very cold and hot temperatures and to work in inclement weather.
